| Installing the Client Software on Mac OS X 10.3 Manually |
Apple Remote Desktop (ARD)client software version 1.2 or later is automatically installed when you install Mac OS X 10.3 or later on a client computer. You can easily upgrade your clients using ARD. See Upgrading Existing Client Software on Mac OS X 10.3 Using ARD for more information.
If you don't want ARDto update your clients using the Upgrade Client Software feature, you can perform a manual update.
To update the client software on the computers you plan to use with ARD, use the ARDadministration software to create a client software installer package. You need the name and password of a user with administrator privileges on the computer to install the package.
- Create the custom client install package.
For detailed instructions, see Creating a Custom Client Installer.
- Copy and install the package on the client computers.
- Distribute the package by removable media, such as a CD
- Copy the installer to the clients over the network using file sharing
- Copy the installer to the clients using command-line tools like scp (if ssh is enabled), and use Apple's command-line installation tool, "installer," to install the package remotely. This process is described in detail in Upgrading Existing Client Software on Mac OS X 10.3 Using ssh.
Warning: Custom install packages that create login names contain sensitive password data. Take care to store such custom installers securely.
